Working in Italy

Italy is home to the third-largest Indian diaspora in Europe, with the community concentrated in Lombardy, Lazio and Emilia-Romagna. Entry is government-regulated through the annual Decreto Flussi quota, which allocates non-EU work permits by sector - non-seasonal jobs, seasonal jobs and self-employment. Workers get access to the EU's Schengen area, a 13th (and in some sectors 14th) month salary, and Italy's national health service. Demand is strongest in agriculture and dairy, construction, hospitality, and elderly care.

Agriculture & Dairy
Punjabi workers are the backbone of Lombardy's dairy belt, milking cows and running farms that produce Parmesan and Grana Padano.

Construction
Ongoing infrastructure and housing renovation projects (including PNRR-funded works) keep demand steady for skilled and semi-skilled labour.

Hospitality & Tourism
Hotels, restaurants and resorts across tourist regions hire seasonal and year-round staff for front-of-house and kitchen roles.

Elderly Care
Italy's ageing population has created strong, steady demand for live-in caregivers (badanti) and domestic support workers.
What life is like in Italy

Worker Protection
Italian labour law caps working time at 48 hours a week (avg.), guarantees 11 hours daily rest and at least 4 weeks paid annual leave.

Modern Infrastructure
High-speed rail, extensive regional transit and free public healthcare (SSN) for all registered residents.

Indian Community
200,000+ Indians in Italy, mostly Punjabi Sikh families. Gurudwaras and Hindu temples are well established in Lombardy and Lazio.

Climate
Cold, foggy winters in the north (0-8°C) and hot summers (30-35°C), with regional heatwave rules that pause outdoor work during peak afternoon hours.
What you'll actually earn
Gross monthly figures set by CCNL sector agreements. Italy has no statutory minimum wage - pay is fixed by collective bargaining. A 13th month salary (tredicesima) is standard and paid on top of these monthly figures.
